. . .ABOUT GENE DIAMOND
Gene Diamond grew up, both physically and musically, in Chicago, Illinois. He began singing in the Junior Choir of the Greater Mount Sinai Baptist Church, at the early age of five. This eventually led to his joining the beloved James Cleveland Gospel Chimes, and later the famed Roberta Martin Singers.
Gene's first real break came when, at Chicago's Sutherland Lounge, he was signed by the late Dinah Washington. Following her untimely death Diamond ventured west and became an integral part of the Ray Charles Show. Since then he has appeared as the featured vocalist with such superb aggregations as The Ramsey Lewis Trio, Gene Harris and the Three Sounds, The Bobby Bryant Quintet, Quincy Jones' Orchestra, Gerald Wilson's Orchestra, Bill Cosby, H.B. Barnum, and numerous others.
He has performed on television, in concert halls, intimate nightclubs, jazz festivals, and on radio. Included in his stops is the Steve Allen Show, the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Allen Ludden's Gallery, and his own PBS show, "On Tour With Gene Diamond," which had a two year run.
A key to Gene Diamond on stage is his quickly established, intimate contact with his audience. In the course of an evening's performance he may waltz them through the 30's and 40's with beautiful standards, rock them through the 50's and 60's, or pull their heart strings with a tasteful rendition of a country tune. Additionally, he can cause his audience to want to hold hands while he sings a sensitive love song, or tease them with some funky blues. Regardless of their musical leanings, he has the versatility to touch them in a very special way, and many times during the show. He may even treat his, now enrapt audience, to one or two of his original compositions.
